MKV is a container file format that can hold an unlimited number of video, audio, picture, or subtitle tracks in one file and Sony Vegas doesn't accept it natively. In order to import MKV Sony Vegas Pro smoothly, you'd need to convert MKV to Sony Vegas Pro supported formats first.

There is a video app call Brorsoft Video Converter can help you achieve your goal smoothly.

Well, the problem is mainly due to that Windows didn't come with the codecs that were used for those particular .. MKV files(AVI is just a wrapper for a large variety of codecs.)... That's why Sony Vegas Pro won't open it.

There is an easy way to fix the issue, you can change your MKV to a more editing-friendly format like WMV, or MPEG-2 or MOV for Sony Vegas. I've had the pleasure of using easefab video converter to chnage MKV to WMV format, and the output files fit seamlessly my Vegas 13.

In order to make Sony Vegas Pro read MKV files, we had better convert MKV to Sony Vegas more supported video format.

This guide also helps to convert MP4, Apple ProRes, FLV, WebM, ASF, MXF, AVCHD, XAVC etc to Sony Vegas video format.

Here is the list of Sony Vegas supported input formats:

MOV, WMV, H.264, AA3, AAF, AIF, ASF, AU, AVC, AVI, BMP, BWF, CDA, DIG, DLX, DPX, DV, EXR, FLAC, GIF, HDP, IVC, JPEG, AVCHD, M2T, M2TS, MVC, Sony MXF (XDCAM and HDCAM SR), MP3, MP4, M4A, MPEG-1 and MPEG-2 video, OGG, MPO, OMA, Panasonic MXF (DVCPRO, AVC-Intra) PCA, PSD, QT, R3D, PNG, SFA, SND, TIFF, TGA, XAVC S, W64, WAV, VOX, WDP, WMA, XAVC Intra MXF

Sony Vegas doesn't support MKV as an input format so it is impossible to import MKV files into Sony Vegas directly.

To open MKV in Sony Vegas, the common method is converting MKV to Sony Vegas supported formats.

Here is a guide to complete the above task at: http://www.faasoft.com/articles/open-mkv-in-sony-vegas.html

Hope it can solve your issue.
