From atop the distant snow covered mountain that beset the sea shore’s horizon, the five men ventured back to the bustling streets and crowded corners of Virwitch. The short trip was sprinkled with stories narrated by Sam mostly on how he had come to craft such magnificent things from his deemed “children” twin swords, to many other mechanical trinket that escaped the minds of the lesser trained travelers.
Upon arrival in the fair city a jovial meeting was short lived by the familiar men, Nicholas and Crazy.
“Ah, I see Mr. Smith wasn’t so hard to find after all. Made the whole trip in as little as three days time.” Nicholas said, greeting his companions. Crazy ducked beside the larger man, clinging to his leisure suit with little regard to it’s steam ironed creasing. Sam winced at the title ‘Mr.’, but didn‘t bother correcting Nicholas, forgiving his current status. “I’ve actually had a little time to get to know this young man a little better, seems to have quite the eccentric personality too I’d say. We’ve spoken quite a lot, or should I say I have spoken to him very much…ahem.” Nicholas cleared his throat realizing his friend now out of sight from the returning rescuers. “Well I can’t really say what that’s all about, but I know one thing he can say. I asked him if he knew any jokes the other day and was quite enthralled by what he had come up with.” Crazy looked up at Nicholas with big curious eyes as the giant gently motioned for him to go ahead.
Sam stepped forward. “Well I’d love it to hear a quick one before we get movin’ for this ship. What’cha got little buddy?” Sam asked most delighted. Crazy began to move around to the front of Nicholas and slowly leaned into Sam’s direction. Sam returned the gesture by leaning in as well until Sam’s ear was a mere few inches from Crazy’s mouth.
“MOOO!” Crazy belted out.
Sam was shocked as was the rest of the party who eagerly awaited this quiet man’s response. He nearly fell over from the roaring laughter it instilled in his rugged frame. Nicholas couldn’t help, but forcing a smile at the interesting sense of humor this man displayed.
“I’m not quite sure I understand it…” Red stated.
“Moo, moo,” Crazy repeated self assuredly.
As everyone came down the road to the docks where Flashy’s ship had been left, they scanned the area for what was to be the new ship. Walking down the water front for quite some time it was becoming clear to Garrinski that the vessel would be nothing like the raggedy ship they had arrived in. They group passed boat after boat and as they went further down the line each ship seemed to match or tower over the last. Finally Nicholas and Sam who had been at the front of the party now stopped.
“It was Mr. Quiton’s desire to give you his most prize possession and I would like to proudly introduce you to it. This is the finest private ship to sail the open sea, meet the ‘Legacy’.” Nicholas announced. Garrinski, Flashy, Red, and Crazy looked on stun at the sheer size and build of the ship. It was large enough for just about a hundred men and it’s hull to frame were brightly polished. A golden trim wrapped around the ship and gave it a beautiful gleaming glow in the afternoon sun. Even the name of the ship was painted in golden letters. “Although she’s not really equipped for anything fighting wise, there’s plenty of room and time to get all that taken care of.” Nicholas continued.
“It shouldn’t take me more than the night to get the engine fit as a horse. Feel free to take whatever time you want to secure what you should need for departure.” Sam said, moving towards the ship’s boarding plank. “Red you better come with me as well, I have some work you can do as well.”
“No problem Mr….I mean Sam.” Red corrected.
“There, we go,” said Sam with a wink and a smile. The two disappeared onto the ship.
“If you would like to come with me, I can provide you gentlemen with suitable quarters for the night.” Nicholas offered.
Flashy couldn’t let himself be treated with such kindness and silently, walked past Nicholas onto the boat. Vash was soon in tow giving a half hearted apology to his supplicant.
“I think they’re much more comfortable on a ship anyway,” Garr tried to explain.
“I understand,” Nicholas stated. “I’ve never found it easier to sleep in a soft warm bed all my life after being exposed to the crude and awkward cradle of the street. But it matters not. I shall see you in the morning and pay my final respects to my friends before I go.” Nicholas walked off with Crazy right behind him.
The night came and went on, but Garrinski didn’t take refuge on the massive ship or in the residence of Mr. Pike and Mr. Quiton. He wandered the streets of the city taking in the events of the past days. *It always seems to be getting further and further away. I don’t know how much time I’ll wind up spending with this prolonged search. It seems more and more people are getting drug along with each passing day and for what, they have not the slightest clue… I can’t stop though. If I can finish this task for him I’ll be happy.* Garrinski thought to himself.
Turning a corner Garrinski became suddenly self aware. A stalker was in his shadow, he watched the people walk around him as this sense of closeness came over him. The uneasy feeling was not one he was unfamiliar with, but unidentified his suspicions went.
There was a man watching him. Since he left the dock this man had stuck behind him with a very keen eye. His actions were silent and footsteps blended with the sounds of the night life all around them. Garrinski turned a corner quickly and disappeared down a narrow alley. That was the end of the cat and mouse game and as morning was soon to begin, the older man made his way back to the docks.
The new crew of the Legacy all met at the first ray of light in the early morning. Nicholas and Crazy had come much baggage in hand drawing looks of bewilderment from Flashy and Sam.
“Don’t worry,” laughed Nicholas, “it’s food mostly. Someone has to help us maintain a healthy diet on the sea, and with my culinary prowess you’ll….”
“Useless,” Vash huffed. Nicholas was put off by this sudden remark, but wouldn’t return such a heartless comment.
